Inventor and Entreprenuer Kid William Kamkwamba From Malawi Africa builds a Windmill from Spare Parts

A drop out Secondary student William Kamkwamba (born 1987) in Malawi, Africa. became famous in 2001, after he built a windmill to power few electrical appliances in his family's house. He built the windmills using simple components such as wood from trees and bicycle parts.

Kamkwamba is self-taught, and learned how to build windmills after having looked at a photograph of one in a library book. He started to build windmills after he left school because he couldn't afford to pay his school tuition.



He has built two other windmills in his village, and the tallest one is thirty nine feet. He is planning to build two more including one that will be located in Lilongwe.

He has attained minor celebrity status. A book "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" written by Bryan Mealer describing his life and accomplishment is being published. He also made a guest appearance in TEDGlobal conference. His bio is here. Also the video of his appearance
