Facebook and Privacy Conundrum
There is a lot of noise about privacy issue plagueing facebook's recent changes to facebook platform.
The founder gets named as "an amoral, Asperger’s-like entrepreneur" by the founder of Mahalo.com
The Big Game, Zuckerberg and Overplaying your Hand | The Jason Calacanis
via calacanis.com
Another author Kim_Mai Cutler at venturebeat writes about facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg:
All very strong beliefs and in some ways odd with the mainstream idea of privacy.
Finally does this confrontation is going to hurt facebook? Not in the short term. The recently released data shows that Facebook is heading towards 500 milllion monthly active users. It has gained 10 million users since its F8 meeting.

The facebook keeps on growing. May be some people will leave, some will be angry but they will stay on Facebook.
The founder gets named as "an amoral, Asperger’s-like entrepreneur" by the founder of Mahalo.com
The Big Game, Zuckerberg and Overplaying your Hand | The Jason Calacanis
Last year, when I realized that Zuckerberg was an amoral,
Asperger’s-like entrepreneur, I told Zynga CEO Mark Pincus that
Zuckerberg would try and slit his throat. I knew this because I
watched Zuckerberg screw over his users again and again in terms of
privacy, and I heard about the stories of him screwing over his former
employers at ConnectU and his early partners at Facebook.
The money quote from Business Insider’s scoop comes from Zuckerberg
himself: “they made a mistake haha. They asked me to make it for them.
So I’m like delaying it so it won’t be ready until after the facebook
thing comes out.” He stalled and sandbagged ConnectU–then
Zuckerpunched them! Of course, the person he said this to was his
partner–Eduardo Saverin–who he reportedly screwed as well.

Another author Kim_Mai Cutler at venturebeat writes about facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg:
He believes that people should have a single identity
He’s a proponent of ‘radical transparency’ or that transparency will overtake modern life:
But he is deeply conscious of the fact that most people don’t ascribe to that idea:
He believes that transparency has the power to create more empathy and tolerance:
He’s afraid that if the company doesn’t gradually open up, it will fail:
He believes that Facebook’s approach to privacy, in which users explicitly share their interests, is more ethically sound than Google’s data collection approach:
All very strong beliefs and in some ways odd with the mainstream idea of privacy.
Finally does this confrontation is going to hurt facebook? Not in the short term. The recently released data shows that Facebook is heading towards 500 milllion monthly active users. It has gained 10 million users since its F8 meeting.
ComScore reported that Facebook had 484 million users in March. The advertising tool showed 436 million users in its advertising tool a couple weeks ago, which we think reflects its numbers from sometime around that time frame. From here, the monthly worldwide growth rate gets harder to determine. ComScore showed 472 million uniques in January, then a drop 463 million in February before rising by 21 million in March. We tracked 373 million at the end of January, then 394 million at the end of February before going up by 42 million in March.

Another Twitter Parody
Twitter must be gaining momentum because people start making fun of Twitter by creating these parodies.
Here is the famous quote from Gandhi "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." If we accept the quote on its face value then Twitter is entering into the second phase of acceptability and it will have to go through at least one more stage before it will become a tool that is respected by all.

Mark Zuckerberg at Web 2.0
Mark Zuckerberg's laws
At this week's Web 2.0 Summit, the Facebook founder mused, according to Saul Hansell of the New York Times, "I would expect that next year, people will share twice as much information as they share this year, and [the] next year, they will be sharing twice as much as they did the year before."Rough Type: Nicholas Carr's Blog
Hansell dubs this Zuckerberg's Law. But I believe it's actually Zuckerberg's Second Law. Zuckerberg's First Law, enunciated on another fall day almost precisely one year ago, took this elemental form: "Once every hundred years media changes."
Zuckerberg's Second Law is certainly superior to Zuckerberg's First Law, if only because it is not quite so obviously false. If you're going to make up big laws, it's always best to make them up about the future rather than the past.

Future of Blogging
Since blogging emerged as a publishing platform many new ways of interacting has gained traction.
Many new software platforms such as
- Social bookmarking examples: digg, stumbleupon, reddit,
- Social Media flickr, youtube
- Social networking facebook, Myspace
In this arrangement blogging becomes one of the tools along with so many other tools that promote the participation and sharing among web users. These tools are easier to use and allow informal conversation among the participants. They provide much more flexibility of expression and equality among participants. Also, blogs are becoming more like traditional media where the popularity of blogs follow the well known power law in which few blogs get majority of the readers attention. Very similar to 20/80 rule like the traditional news and media organizations. Web promised to bring more participation and equality of participation not morph into another reincarnation of traditional media. If that is the case why do we need another competing media. From economical point of view it is inefficient use of resources.
The fastest growing platform on the web right now is social networking with web sites such as Myspace, Facebook and many others. They allow much more informal interaction among participants and in many ways make it easier to create user profiles and let member use other features offered by these social networking web sites. The main problem is that they are mostly walled gardens and the user are mostly at the mercy of the owners of these platforms.
There are other options like Ning, Elegg and PeopleAggregator that allow users to create their own social networks. Interesting thing is that all these platforms are moving in the same direction when it comes to offering the features. The list of the features offered by these social networking software platforms could be long but it follows the same trend that is
- User Profiles, management of user profiles
- Communication tools such as IM, Chat and e-mail
- Blogging capability through notes
- Social Media capablities through images and videos
- Forums and discussions
- Application that can be added with ease within the user profile
- Lifestreaming through live feeds etc.
What does it all have to do with blogging? The blogging software is also evolving. The blogger platform from Google already allows to add widgets and with Google's friend connect in beta a blog can be transformed into a small social network very similar to what Mybloglog is already offering. The recent release of Typepad Pro goes even further and offers pretty much all the essential capabilities that a social networking platform offers minus lifestreaming that people may be able add in the future through simple browser plugins currently in beta.
Here is the figure that shows the capabilities of their newly release blogging platform
The Pro part of the software platform is essentially all the capabilities that one will find in a social networking platform.
Does this all mean that in the future the blogs will evolve and will become web sites that will essentially be a mini social networking web sites? It seems that way if this trend is any indication of the future.
The availability of inexpensive devices to capture and edit images and videos will make it easier to create user generated visual content. This has already created huge image banks at Flickr web site and according to the compete web analytics Youtube ranks #6 most visited site on the Internet with 62 million unique users per month. The rise of Youtube within few short years shows that video as a medium is more expressive and attracts more attention compared to text based write ups.
Does this mean that future blogs will be created using a hybrid of text, images, videos and interactivity as media? Again it seems that way if we follow the trend.
This however will create a serious generation gap between older people who practiced writing and prefer text and younger people who will prefer images, audio and video as a medium of expression.

Her talk can help in making decisions about the use of social networking environment for teaching and learning.
It is tempting to utilize the well known virtual social spaces created by MySpace and Facebook for teaching and learning. However, such attempts may turn out difficult due to the perception of virtual social spaces as a place to socialize not a place for work.

10 Million In 10 Weeks -- What Stanford Learned Building Facebook Apps
BJ Fogg's slides on slideshare describing their experience in teaching a course about developing applications for facebook.
I find his slide 39 where he describes the cycle of control and chaos to solve a complex problem very informative. It defies both the top down autocratic approach to problem solving and the free for all lets have an emergent system or the crowd that preaches that order emerges from total chaos.
It is true that the order does emerge from chaos but the where does it say that the emergent order will be favorable to us. It may turn out to be a total nightmare.
Considering this his approach of problem solving while dealing with complex system seems to be the most sensible one.

Twitter, Friendfeed, Facebook and Seesmic
what they all have in common? On the surface it appears that they are separate applications on the Internet with very different characteristics. In fact twitter does not even appear to be a tool for conversation. When you first get on it it appears to be a totally random chatter. A completely disorienting experience. Same is true for FriendFeed and Seesmic but if some one persist these applications grow on you. There is an intrinsic order in these applications and it start to become clear as time goes on.
Here is Loic from Seesmic TV explaining his use of these tools using Seesmic Video.
People can even join in on the conversation here with him.
He also has a blog post to explain his use of these tools to more intellectually oriented users here.
Moral of the story is that Internet Communication tools are disruptive to the mass communication media. Once people start spending time with these tools as creator of their own media for their own consumption i.e. pro-sumer we will see massive shifts in ways how the media is created and used.
